Men’s basketball started off strong in late March, and Cardinals won five games straight. In the season starter Peninsula College couldn’t stop the Cardinals flow throughout the game at home, leading to a Cardinal’s victory 71-68. The following week April 3rd Edmonds Community College came to Mount Vernon and had a tough time slowing down the Cardinals as they ran up the score 80-65 in an overall effective game plan from offense to defense. The first away game didn’t sway the Cardinals from another win and showed up prepared in Bellevue with an 83-78 win, the three-game winning streak continues, and the men’s team hasn’t reached their full potential this season. The next three games the Cardinals went 2-1, giving their best only losing to Peninsula College in a rematch. While some changes came to the schedule with April 24th through May 1st games cancelled, the season looks promising for the Cardinals to reach the playoffs and are expected to compete May 8th upcoming game against Edmonds Community College, stay tuned for more.

Women’s basketball seasons had a similar season start off against Peninsula college, Cardinals won in a defensive game by the score of 47-36 at home. April 3rd Cardinals competed against Olympic College and continued their two-game winning streak. While ending the game with 73 point to 62 points, cardinals came prepared this season. After the hot start, things began to slow down for the Cardinals losing two games that came to the 4th quarter and they gave their best efforts. As expected, three game cancellations were made which is a difficult decision since every game counts. While the Cardinals had some time to recuperate, things didn’t go as game planed and costed them two games, both were rematches against Bellevue, Whatcom Community College.

However, the women’s team stands at 2-4 record, their hope to make some changes and turn the season around. Sports Reporter Vince Richardson briefly breakdown May 6ths Cardinals basketball games between the Cardinals and Peninsula College. Richardson says, “The 2-5 Cardinals started the game with six players, which only makes this game more difficult as that number came down to five midways through the first half”. Richardson explains in a short interview “Although the Cardinals lost 60-38, not all the team starters were present for this game, there is still hope toward this team and the season hasn’t ended”. As Cardinals basketball continues to move forward into May’s schedule, we expect some tough games down the stretch and might see the lack of normal team preparation in fall, cause some unfortunate outcomes. Even if the Cardinals women’s team can’t advance to the playoff, we can appreciate the passion they played with this season and can hopefully turn things around. The men’s team has yet played their next game, which we await sometime this week.
